Choosing a size? See our guide: Square art above a sofa or bed, shown to scale.

The painting. Barque is built on one strong shape: a wide black hull that fills the lower half of the square, its surface worked with grey brush marks. Inside it, figures in red, navy, pink and white press shoulder to shoulder, and a tall red figure stands at the right edge. Above them the pale sky is crossed by thin drawn lines, so the top half stays light while the bottom carries the weight.

Where it works. That heavy black base anchors a wall, which makes Barque a good choice above a low sofa, a dining sideboard or a hallway bench. It sits comfortably with black metal, dark wood and white walls, and the red gives one strong accent to an otherwise neutral room.

Choosing a size. The true-scale size guide (the last photo on this page) shows a range of the square sizes above a large sofa, with a person for reference. At the largest sizes the hull spans most of a sofa and reads clearly from across the room. A mid-to-large square suits a smaller sofa or a long sideboard, and the smaller sizes fit a console or a narrow hallway wall. Every available size, with its exact measurements, is listed in the size options.

Format. A square canvas with no glass in front, so there are no reflections to work around, even opposite a window.
