Square art is one of the hardest shapes to size by eye. A square covers less width than a landscape piece of the same height, so a size that looked generous on screen can shrink to a postage stamp once it is hanging above an 84-inch sofa. Most sizing advice is also written for rectangles, which leaves square pieces to guesswork.
So we drew it. Below you'll find square paintings at 50, 70, 100 and 135 cm, shown to true scale above a 213 cm (84″) sofa and a 193 cm (76″) king bed, with the few simple rules behind each picture. Every work shown is a real piece from the shop, and each size links straight to it.
The short answer
- Above a 200–215 cm (78–84″) sofa: one square of 100 to 135 cm, or a pair of 70 cm squares.
- Above a king bed: 100 cm suits most bedrooms. Go to 120 or 135 cm only with a high ceiling, or hang a pair of 70s.
- 50 cm squares are lovely, but not alone over a full-size sofa or bed. Use them in pairs or threes, or over a nightstand, desk or console.
Rule 1: Cover about half to two-thirds of the furniture width
The classic guideline is that art should span roughly two-thirds of the furniture below it. In practice, anything from about 50% to 75% looks deliberate. Below 40%, a single piece starts to look as if it is floating.
| Square size | Over a 213 cm sofa | Over a 193 cm king bed | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 x 50 cm (20″) | 23% | 26% | Too small on its own |
| 70 x 70 cm (28″) | 33% | 36% | Best as a pair |
| 100 x 100 cm (39–40″) | 47% | 52% | The safe single piece |
| 135 x 135 cm (53″) | 63% | 70% | The statement size |
Because a square is as tall as it is wide, every step up in width also adds height, so with squares the ceiling matters more.

Square art above a sofa
50 x 50 cm. At under a quarter of the sofa's width, a single 50 cm square reads as an afterthought. It shines on a narrow wall or in a row of three, like Hush, paper print, 50 x 50 cm.
70 x 70 cm. A third of the sofa is still on the light side for one piece, but this is the ideal size for a pair. Alone, it suits a 140–150 cm two-seater. Shown: Kinship, paper print, 70 x 70 cm.
100 x 100 cm. This is the size most people should start from. It covers nearly half of an 84″ sofa, fits comfortably under a standard ceiling and still has real presence. Shown: Barque, canvas, 100 x 100 cm.
135 x 135 cm. At almost two-thirds of the sofa, this is a whole gallery wall in one piece. Shown: Sabbath, canvas, 135 x 135 cm. Hung 15 cm above the sofa back, its top edge sits at about 235 cm, which is tight under a standard 8-foot (244 cm) ceiling. In lower rooms, choose 100 or 120 cm.
Square art above a king bed

A king bed is narrower than a big sofa, but the headboard pushes the art higher. Here the headboard is 95 cm and the art hangs 18 cm above it.
- 50 x 50 cm (Rooted, paper print) gets lost above a king bed. Hang two of them over the nightstands instead, one on each side.
- 70 x 70 cm (Repose, paper print) works well as a pair, or alone above a double or queen bed.
- 100 x 100 cm (Reverie, canvas) is the sweet spot: just over half the bed's width, with its top edge at about 213 cm, so it suits almost any bedroom.
- 135 x 135 cm (Hush, canvas) is beautiful, but its top edge reaches about 248 cm, higher than an 8-foot ceiling. Save it for rooms of 2.7 m (9 ft) or more, or a low headboard.
A practical bedroom tip: canvas has no glazing, so there are no reflections from a bedside lamp, and it's lighter than a large glazed frame over the place you sleep.
Rule 2: Hang it 15–25 cm above the furniture
You may have heard that the centre of a picture should sit at eye level, about 145–150 cm from the floor. That works on an empty wall. Over furniture, the gap below the art matters more.
- Above a sofa: keep the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the top of the sofa back. With a typical 85 cm back, that puts the bottom edge at 100–110 cm, enough that nobody bumps it when they lean back.
- Above a bed: keep the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the headboard.
- Below the ceiling: leave at least 15–20 cm of wall above the art so it doesn't look squeezed. If you can't, go one size down rather than hanging the piece lower.
Rule 3: One large piece or a pair?

One large square gives a calmer wall and a single focal point. It suits high ceilings and pared-back rooms. Barque at 135 x 135 cm covers 63% of the sofa.
A pair of 70 cm squares covers even more width, 70% of the sofa with an 8 cm gap, but only half the height. That makes a pair the better choice under standard or low ceilings, beside a window, or above a wide bed. A few rules make a pair look intentional:
- Use the same size and the same frame for both.
- Keep the gap tight, 5–10 cm, and centre the pair as one unit over the furniture.
- Choose two related works rather than the same image twice. Kinship and Repose both show embracing figures in blocks of yellow, red and deep blue, so they read as a conversation.
Test it before you choose
Cut kraft paper to the exact size, or mark the outline with painter's tape, and live with it for a day. Look from the doorway, then from the sofa or bed. It takes ten minutes and beats any calculator.
One last detail: a frame adds a few centimetres on every side, and an optional mount on a paper print adds more. Check the framed size on the listing before you measure your template.
Frequently asked questions
Is 70 x 70 cm too small above a sofa?
Over a 200–215 cm sofa, one 70 cm square covers only a third of the width. Hang two side by side, or choose 100 cm. Over a 140–150 cm two-seater, one is a good fit.
What size square art goes above a king bed?
A 100 x 100 cm piece suits most king beds and standard ceilings. Go to 120 or 135 cm only if your ceiling is 2.7 m (9 ft) or higher.
What size square art goes above a queen bed?
A queen bed is about 152 cm wide, so one 100 cm square (about two-thirds) or a pair of 50 cm squares works well.
How high should square art hang above a sofa?
Keep the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the sofa back, usually 100–110 cm from the floor.
Canvas or framed paper print?
Paper prints come in 50, 70 and 100 cm and look crisp behind a frame, especially in a pair. Giclée canvas goes up to 135 cm, has no glazing and comes ready to hang, which makes it the easier choice for large sizes and over a bed.
