The painting. Sabbath is a crowd seen from above. Dozens of small figures in ochre, yellow, black and touches of pink and red gather around the edges of the square, all turned towards a bright white burst at the centre. Paint drips run down through the lower half, and the more time you spend with it, the more individual figures, faces and gestures you find.

Where it works. Because the colour sits at the edges and the centre stays light, Sabbath keeps a room bright rather than heavy. It suits a living room, a dining room where people sit and look for a while, or a study wall you face every day. Warm wood, ochre and cream furnishings pick up its palette.

Choosing a size. This is a painting of small details, so it rewards a larger size. The true-scale size guide (the last photo on this page) shows a range of the square sizes above a large sofa, with a person for reference. At the larger sizes the figures read clearly from a sofa or dining chair. The smaller sizes work best where you see it up close: a hallway, a reading corner or above a desk. Every available size, with its exact measurements, is listed in the size options.
